Is circumcision good or bad?

Hello dear friends and welcome to Dr Shahs Circumcision clinic.

In this short blog post we are going to quickly answer the question ‘is circumcision good or bad’?

Firstly we are going to divide the answer into parts. Part A – Is circumcision good? Why should you circumcise? What are the benefits of doing a circumcision?

Next,

We will discuss on Part B – Os circumcision bad? Are there any specific disadvantages to doing a circumcision?

Now let us discuss as to why you should undergo a circumcision To briefly understand the concepts, one must be familiar with the specific reasons for choosing a circumcision procedure.

One of the commonest reasons for going ahead with a tight foreskin removal is religious. Consequently, a large proportion of individuals undergo a circumcision during infancy immediately post birth. Furthermore, among adults circumcision to remove the foreskin is done for a variety of reasons. These include the following situations as I have elaborated below.

  1. The patient has tried sexual intercourse for the first time post marriage. The patient notices he is unable to penetrate his partner. He also notices that foreskin is quite excessive. In this scenario, a circumcision is recommended
  2. Next, the patient tries intercourse with his partner, however, upon penetration is notices that he loses erection. Furthermore, he does not have a habit of pulling his foreskin back before penetration. Since, pulling his skin back causes him pain. In these scenarios, the patient definitely needs a circumcision
  3. In the next scenario, the patient may be suffering from lifelong premature ejaculation due to sensitivity in the glan’s region. Here again, a circumcision or a tight foreskin removal treatment is recommended
  4. In yet another scenario, the patient might have had sexual relationships with multiple partners. Consequently in these scenarios a foreskin removal procedure is definitely recommended.

Lastly, if the patient suffers from uncontrolled diabetes, it’s highly likely that the patient may have repeated cuts on the foreskin. In these instances it is wise to undergo a circumcision removal.

Is doing a circumcision good??

Hello yeah! Nothing beats. A foreskin that is tight has numerous disadvantages. Moreover, the benefits of circumcision are as follows

  • Circumcision prevents the spread of dangerous sexually transmitted diseases. These include conditions like HIV, Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Herpes, HPV and lastly syphilis.
  • To further elaborate, removing the foreskin not only prevents an STD transmission, it also effectively prevents the acquisition of STD’s
  • Next, doing a circumcision has been shown to prevent the incidence of dangerous penile cancer. Nothing beats that. Circumcision is probably among the very few procedures that is cancer protective
  • Moreover, circumcision improves the quality of erectile function in men facing erectile dysfunction due to a tight foreskin.
  • To further add to the benefits of a circumcision, removing the foreskin increases ejaculatory time in patients suffering from premature ejaculation.
  • Lastly, for patients with diabetes mellitus, doing a circumcision greatly reduces hospital visits due to foreskin infections.

On the negative side, are there any disadvantages to the circumcision?

To be honest, from a personal view point none. Call me biased, but after 10 years of clinical experience and seeing numerous patients undergoing circumcision, I have not had a single patient come back to me with complaints or regrets. Furthermore, it’s important to understand that as with any surgical procedure circumcision has risks, but these largely come down only to the skill of the surgeon doing the procedure.

Some difficulties that can arise while doing the circumcision include

  • Removing excessive foreskin more than necessary. This will give your organ an ungainly experience
  • Improperly arresting the bleeding is another important issue since this will cause sudden bleeds post surgery, which can be traumatic for patients
  • Improper counselling before surgery. To further elaborate in this instance it is important to understand that most patients strongly believe that the presence of their foreskin contributes to their sensitivity of the organ. The truth is otherwise, the patient should be told that the presence of their foreskin only impairs the actual sensitivity of the glans underneath the skin. Moreover, a foreskin that is tight and that does not come back can lead to glans hypersensitivity which is a much bigger problem. This is because glans hypersensitivity interferes with erectile function. Thus counselling before procedure clarifies false doubts about the foreskin that the patient may harbour in his mind.

To conclude, circumcision can only lead to issues if there is gross medical negligence. Circumcision as a procedure is definitely recommended for patients and should be seen as an ‘investment’ on their sexual health.
